China's first tidal energy two-way power station - visit Wenling Jiangxia Power Station

March 13, 2023

Located in Jiangxia Port, Yueqing Bay, southwest of Wenling City, Jiangxia Chaoshan Experimental Power Station is China's first tidal energy two-way power station, second only to France's Lansse Tidal Power Station and the Canadian Annapolis Tidal Power Station, ranking third in the world.

The reporter got off the bus and arrived at the entrance of the Chaoshan Power Station. The gate that is set up on the roadside less than 5 meters wide is opposite to the entrance of a row of three-story houses opposite to the Chaoshan Power Station.

The reporter came to Jiangxia Chaoshan Power Station. It was the second day after snowfall. The sun shone with the snow in the branches. Because it was noon, the entire power station seemed very quiet, coupled with almost "clean" ground, people lamented as "health factory."

Tide is a cyclical fluctuation that occurs when seawater is subjected to the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun. It has enormous energy. China has a long coastline with numerous twists and turns, numerous harbors, and abundant tidal energy reserves. According to the 1982 survey of tidal resources, there are 191 sites with a total installed capacity of 500 kilowatts or more and a total installed capacity of 21,580,000 kilowatts, which can be exploited. Chaoshan can generate 61.9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. In the 1950s, more than 100 small tidal power stations were built in the coastal areas of China, but the vast majority of them were improperly sited, poorly equipped, and poorly managed.

The Huanleqing Bay area of Zhejiang Province, including Wenling City, lacks of hydraulic resources and coal resources, and the construction of hydroelectric power stations and thermal power stations is restricted. In the 1960s and 1970s, the use of electricity was very tense. However, the tide energy contained in Yueqing Bay is very rich and belongs to the high tidal range of China's coastal areas. In October 1959, the Shashan Tidal Power Station (transformed into a tidal power station in July 1965 and installed a 40-kilowatt unit) was built at the exit of the Jiangxia Bay and established a successful example of the use of tidal energy in China. The local cadres and people are eagerly looking forward to using tidal power to actively propose proposals to the relevant departments for the construction of large-scale tidal power stations in Yueqing Bay.

In July 1970, the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power decided that the 12th Engineering Bureau of the Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity shall organize a survey and design team to survey the tidal resources in Leqing Bay and select sites for the Chaoshan Hydropower Station. After more than one year of investigation and study, the Qiyi Weitang Project in Wenxi District was selected as a pilot project for tidal power generation.

In March 1972, the State Planning Commission formally approved the construction of the Jiangxi Xia Chaoshan Experimental Power Station and listed it as an important national scientific research project.

China's largest tidal power station

After passing through the maintenance workshop, oil treatment room, and discharge gate, the reporter stood looking at the power plant and looked at the distance. He saw the long embankment and a small pavilion with an open field of vision. There is a quiet dwarf hill in the power station. Walking up and up, the rows of vegetables are greeted by the eyes. Because of the snow, many vegetables have been “buckled.”

An old employee who has been working for more than 10 years is doing post-disaster processing during the lunch break. When he sees a reporter, he also says hello and says that he is a “place of paradise”.

Jiangxia Chaoshan Experimental Power Station is 16 kilometers away from Wenling City. The power station is designed and equipped with six bidirectional bulb turbine generators with a total installed capacity of 3,900 kilowatts. It is the test base for the development and utilization of tidal energy in China and is also the largest tidal power plant in China. year 2010. When the power generated by the Jiangxia Chaoshan Experimental Power Plant reached 7.32 billion, it reached a record high since 2009.

The Chaozhou Power Station Hub consists of a dam, a factory building, a power generation channel, a sluice, and a switch station. The construction of the project coincided with the later stage of the "cultural mega-environment". The "left-wing" trend of thought interfered, the infrastructure program was destroyed, the project investment was strained, the construction equipment was poor, and the employees' life was hard. However, the majority of project builders eliminated interference, overcame difficulties, and carried forward the spirit of hard work. In March 1974, the dam was finally completed. In 1976, the foundation pit and channel excavation and discharge sluice reconstruction were completed, and the reinforced concrete factory at the end of 1979. The completion of the main project construction task was completed. At the same time, the Engineering Command and various cooperative units have successively carried out experimental research on topics such as the use of tidal energy, two-way tidal units, anti-corrosion and anti-fouling, and comprehensive utilization, and achieved fruitful results. On May 4, 1980, Unit 1 was officially put into production (500 KW capacity), becoming the first two-way bulb tubular unit to be put into operation in China. By 1985, Units 2, 3, 4 and 5 were connected to the grid for power generation. At this point, the total installed capacity of the power station reached 3,200 kilowatts, and the power generation in the year was 2,336,700 kilowatt-hours.

“In the 1980s, although the power generated by our tidal stations could not be compared with the present, it has largely eased the surrounding areas, including the tension in Wenling. Although the power consumption in Wenling is now one day, It has already exceeded 4 billion kilowatts, and our tidal power station has a total output of ninety percent, but it is undeniable that its historical role is very large,” said Yan Jianhua, chief of the Wenzhou Jiangsha Chaoshan Experimental Power Station.

Declaration of the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units

On July 15, 2010, Bao Xianlun, deputy director of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and director of the Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, inspected the provincial-level cultural relic protection unit Jiangsha Chaoshan Experimental Power Station. At present, Jiangxia Chaoshan Experimental Power Station is applying for the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

The Jiangsha Power Station project is an important national scientific research project. The research results such as tidal level forecasting and reservoir scheduling have brought considerable economic benefits to the power station. Research and trials on tidal energy characteristics, anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, comprehensive utilization and new technology applications have been conducted. It has created the necessary conditions for the safe production and sustainable development of the power station.

"When it comes to the protection of the Chaoshan Power Plant, the main thing is to protect the unit's equipment against radiation and pollution. For example, adding zinc into the unit to absorb harmful substances and applying radiation protection paint to the machine."

In addition, Yan Jianhua told the reporter that in May 2009, the Longmen Zhejiang Sanmen Chaoshan Power Generation Project Establishment Office was established. Once completed, the estimated total installed capacity will reach 20,000 kilowatts, which is five times that of the current Jiangxia Chaoshan Power Station.
